First Radio Debate

Technology took the stage in 1924 when Oregon faced UC Berkeley in the nation’s first radio debate. Radios were rare in Oregon homes, so towns gathered in school gyms to hear the crackling broadcast. Afterward, listeners mailed in their ballots — Oregon won 3–1. Forensics had become a shared experience across the state.
